I was in and out of hospital, and had more invasive tests and CT scans than anyone should have in a lifetime.
He was concerned that I wouldn’t cope with the altitude and thought my hydration levels would plummet. I was 37 and a mother of two, living in East Sussex.
More than that, I was in perfect health and training for an Ironman triathlon. I was rushed into hospital with a perforated bowel and a very serious episode of peritonitis; requiring emergency surgery to save my life.
No one had to know anything other than I had surgery. External appliance or no external appliance; I still wasn’t okay with my situation. It wasn’t until I connected with other people who I felt understood what I was going through, that things began to turn around for me.
I also was never going to be in a positive relationship if I couldn’t fully be myself.
It forced me to become this phony person who never felt good enough, who felt the need to constantly please people, who had absolutely no self confidence, and who had no idea what a real relationship should be.
I was so obsessed (literally, there was no other word to describe me during this time) with getting rid of this thing on my stomach that I poured my heart and soul into focusing on alternative surgeries that would allow me to be with a guy and have him find me attractive and be able to wear clothes that everyone else could.Remember, we’re just a telephone call away and we’re always happy to help. For housebound and elderly patients we offer a prescription request service. It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that when a person has any type of ostomy, dating can be a bit of a challenge. It depends on the individuals age, their level of comfort/acceptance with their body, the person they have the attraction to, what a person is looking to get out of that first date, etc. I was so focused on being different and how gross I felt that I lost site of the fact that I was still me.Life was utterly miserable and if someone had given me a gun I might have been tempted to use it.
